choosing heroine voiceclaims

how do i choose voiceclaims for my heroines? i thought it would be fun to write down the short list of things i consider. written march 2025.

for the most part i look at who else is cast in canon and try to match:

level of famousness + general field: i won't pick someone way too famous for a source media that is indie, or someone too indie for a project that seems to be casting big names. "would the casting director choose this person?" "would this person say yes to this project?"

• ex. ducktales is full of comedians and established actors, so i have to pick people who have experience in comedy or have already had slightly more major parts in american tv.

age: does the show cast young people to play young roles, or does anything go?

• ex. mutant mayhem cast teenagers for the turtles, so i chose a younger actress for my heroine!

own voices casting: i usually choose asian voice actresses, since most of my heroines are asian. i will especially do this if the source media's casting tends to cast people of accurate heritage to the character.

• in the case of emelina, i picked an actress who spoke spanish, because that made sense when put in context with the rest of the cast.

voice acting experience: if they have no voice acting experience, i can't... i can't cast them........ acting is different from voice acting! you can still SUCK at voice acting if you're a good actress (which is the case for emelina's VA, but at least she has a few credits to her name so i can assess...)
